To secure competence within health service and hospital care in thinly- populated areas in Sweden it seems to be necessary with a higher education available at the place of residence. The Department of Nursing, UmeƄ University, realizes computer-supported distance nursing education. The aim is to describe how e-meetings can be used in distance education for students in nursing at university level. The first written evaluation includes the period between January 2005 and January 2006. Since the whole class (n=31) only had one meeting/a semester, at the department, the communication took place by web-based platform, telephone and e-meetings. In the software program Marratech a virtual learning environment was created where the teachers (n=3) met students in real time, saw each other, communicated in text and sound, transferred pictures and worked with common documents. E-meetings were used in supervision, seminaries and in examinations. Outcome results from continues evaluation will be presented. Preliminary results show that this kind of learning environment was appropriate both for students and teachers to meet and work in real time.
