Becoming a member of the European community and NATO opens many opportunities for Latvia, but at the same time we have to revise how prepared we are to prevent the consequences if emergency occurs. Concerning emergency and disaster medicine, former tools and organizational structures are not corresponding any more to the current situation. In this article, we introduce the current and upcoming structure and organization of the Emergency and Disaster Medicine System in Latvia. We have paid attention particularly to the essential component of Emergency and Disaster Medicine System- pre-hospital Emergency Medical Services. This new approach reveals better possibilities for the State's stewardship in this field and increases response capacities for emergency and disaster medicine management.
