Despite the promise of independence and improved quality of life available through the increase of assistive technology (AT) supports and services, the rate of AT non-use and discontinued use remains high. Creative and interdisciplinary strategies, featuring the AT user as an essential participant in the process, are necessary to ensure that appropriate AT is selected and used by individuals with disabilities to increase their access to education, employment, and community life. Three considerations in implementing a more responsive approach to AT identification and acquisition include (1) AT-user education, (2) training for professionals, and (3) a holistic assessment process that leads to optimal AT use and user satisfaction. This three-pronged approach has been implemented as a result of international interdisciplinary collaboration among the three authors and their respective organizations. Case studies and outcome data have been gathered in both Ireland and the US to demonstrate the successful utilization of practical educational strategies for consumers and professionals.
