Over the last ten years, ambitious, national and regional research programmes have been initiated to support technology breakthroughs aimed at further noise reduction. Such initiatives have been established in the European Union, the United States, Japan, Canada, Brazil and the Russian Federation. The emergence of dedicated network structures has played a significant role in the elaboration and successful implementation of these various initiatives. In Europe in particular, important works are being conducted within the context of the Framework Programmes. This paper summarises the achievements of the research effort dedicated to the reduction of aviation noise as coordinated by the X-Noise network through the Coordination Actions X3-Noise (2006–2010) and X-Noise EV (2010–2014).
