Jeju sand, which contains both siliceous and calcareous materials, is the highly crushable one and has high extreme void ratios due to the grain angularity and intra-particle voids. In this study, a series of CPTs and DMTs are carried out on the specimens reconstituted in a calibration chamber to evaluate the properties of crushable Jeju beach sand. It is observed that the particle crushing during the DMT penetration into the Jeju sand results in the smaller horizontal stress index (KD) and dilatometer modulus (ED). The KD-qc/σv' relation is found to be more dependent on the compressibility of granular particles than the ED-qc relation. It is concluded that the KD of granular soil is more significantly affected by particle characteristics than ED and qc.
