In this paper we discuss the use of an ontology of situations, interactions, processes and affordances in the design of intelligent learning environments. Due to its broad scope, the ontology allows to provide an integrated view of the several aspects involved in the design of these systems. It also allows to address issues related to the connections between the context of learning and what is learned, between knowledge and activity, and between the process and the product of learning, which have been addressed by recent research on education.
