In this paper, I argue for use-inspired basic research on assessment for deep learning of core abilities in interdisciplinary fields of study essential to meet the scientific, technological, educational, and workforce challenges of the 21st century. I emphasize the critical role of technology as an object of research and development, and as a means of organizing, conducting, and communicating research and applications.
