This paper describes a network-based approach to study the exchange of messages between students in an online group learning environment. The approach models the learners and instructor as a collection of nodes which link together with message exchange mechanisms. The mechanisms are represented as directed arcs in which their directions indicate the orientation of the flow. Regular patterns of message exchange reveal the participants as social network which structures the flow of learning information between students and instructor. The method provides quantitative information for assessing interactions.
