This paper is concerned with using student profiles and reflection to aid autonomous learning and “address the conceptual domain of learning conceptions and beliefs” [4]. This is achieved by using a reflective and participatory methodology to help students to develop as autonomous learners. The concepts of a student cognitive profile, an individual learning environment (ILE) and a Reflective and Participatory Approach to Design (RAPAD) are introduced. Each student was involved in the design and development of an individual learning environment by means of reflection on and discussion of his or her cognitive profile. Summary data and student comments are presented to help illustrate the student involvement in the process and how the process was operationalized. The implications of the work are discussed before conclusions are drawn. It is suggested that student involvement in the design and development of an ILE on the basis of reflection on personal cognitive profiles can help “address the conceptual domain of learning conceptions” and assist in the development of students as autonomous learners.
