Since 1987, personal health card system using IC card with 8KB memory has been developed in Japan by the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MHW). More than 20 projects have been tried by cities or hospitals in Japan. Most of them are relatively small in scale compared with the projects sponsored by MHW. Some of them do not use IC card but optical (laser) card. The outline of the personal card system in Himeji are described.
