The Internet is rapidly becoming an essential component of daily living, social interaction, education and employment. As a result, those who cannot access and use technologies are increasingly being put at a distinct educational, social, and economic disadvantage in comparison to those who do have access. Raising the Floor (RtF) is an international consortium of organizations, projects and individuals focused on ensuring that people experiencing disabilities, literacy problems, or the effects of aging are able to access and use all of the information, resources, services and communities available on or through the Web even if they have little or no resources. RtF uses an open source model in order to maximize collaboration and will be building access features directly into the Internet in order to allow anyone, anywhere to use any computer they encounter to access the Internet. Basic access features will be free but the system will also support virtual commercial AT for advanced features and special applications.
